Braces For Kids

Starting braces for your kids at an early age may help your child avoid more complicated and potentially more invasive orthodontic procedures in the future. Taking advantage of developing teeth and jawbone at an early age will help guide your child’s smile into proper alignment much more efficiently rather than correct a problem once permanent teeth are allowed to come in.

Preadolescent patients benefit most in cases where a skeletal component requires correction such as cross bite, open bite, severe overbite or developing under bite. By the time your child is seven years old, the foundation for his/her smile has developed enough to determine how their smile will ultimately form. At this age, the skeletal bones have not yet calcified or hardened making the jawbone much easier to manipulate and correct. This is especially beneficial to kids who will require some form of maxillary expander to widen their smile either to make room for incoming teeth or to correct a bite problem.

If you think your child may be a candidate for early orthodontic treatment please call or complete the form to book your free consultation.

Interceptive Orthodontic Benefits

By the age of seven, your child’s mouth has formed the basic structure that will allow a nameChicago to identify how his/her smile will develop as the permanent teeth start to emerge. By starting braces for kids before the jawbone and skeletal bones have hardened, we are able to addresses a child’s smile concerns much more efficiently and prevent future dental problems from requiring more extensive correction.

While your child’s primary teeth are still in the mouth, nameChicago has more control over where the permanent teeth emerge, thereby preventing more severe bite problems down the road.

The benefits of interceptive orthodontic braces for kids include a clear and accurate prognosis on how your child’s permanent teeth will develop and the advantage of correcting any habits that may impact oral development such as tongue pushing or thumb sucking.

Through early intervention, nameChicago will be able correct bite problems such as open bite, cross bite, etc. more efficiently as the the ability to guide a growing jaw is easier before its fully developed and allowed to calcify or harden. This allows nameChicago to create the space necessary to accommodate the emerging permanent teeth more easily and with less discomfort in addition to reducing the risk of damage caused by crowding.

By providing your child with the orthodontic treatment he/she requires early on, you enable them to grow into adolescence with their best smile increasing their self esteem and confidence. Orthodontic braces for kids also helps to prevent the need to more invasive dental correction required once permanent teeth have emerged in the jaw.

If your child doesn’t require orthodontic treatment, your free consultation will allow both you and your child to become familiar with what treatment options are available in the future to ensure their best smile. We aim at building lasting relationships with our patients, giving children the opportunity to feel comfortable and aware of the many options nameChicago can offer.

Two Stage Orthodontic Treatment for Children

Once your consultation with nameChicago has determined that your child is a candidate for early orthodontic treatment, the corrective dental process will begin with the first of two stages.

Braces for Kids Stage One

The first stage will begin immediately to take advantage of the more easily manipulated primary teeth and jawbone. This will include the correction of harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. At this stage, your dentist will be able to direct the growth of the jawbones to ensure permanent teeth erupt straight and safely.

By guiding the jawbones into proper alignment, nameChicago can ensure there is enough room for incoming teeth. This reduces the risk of damage to permanent teeth and establishes a stable foundation that compels teeth to stay in their proper position.

Ensuring that the foundation of your child’s smile develops properly from the start helps to prevent future problems from occurring. Having a properly aligned smile will also help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums and promote a more aesthetic arrangement of teeth, lips and face.

Braces for Kids Stage Two

Once your child is older and your dentist has determined it is the appropriate time to address any additional corrective orthodontic needs, you may progress into the second stage of treatment to move the permanent teeth into their final ideal position. This will not only help to improve teeth function and facial features, it will give your child a boost a self esteem.

The reason we practice two stage orthodontic braces treatment for kids is to allow your child’s dental care to compliment his/her growth process. This orthodontic system takes advantage of preadolescence to help manipulate their smile into perfect alignment so that permanent teeth can erupt easily in the less invasive manner possible.

Conditions That May Benefit from Early Orthodontic Treatment

The objective behind interceptive orthodontic braces for kids is to take advantage of a child’s developing smile to prevent future problems from forming. nameChicagowill conduct an evaluation to identify how the teeth are growing in so that alignment issues or bite concerns can be guided into position during the growth process rather than being corrected after the fact.

A child’s mouth is more receptive to manipulation before the permanent teeth have erupted because the facial bones are much more pliable and receptive to modification. This is exactly why prolonged thumbsucking or tongue thrusting can change the positioning of the teeth, jaw alignment, and may result in an open bite.

Conditions that may benefit from early orthodontics include open bite, deep bite, crossbite, crowding, overjet, spacing, missing teeth, and/or teeth emerging in improper sequence to name a few. Orthodontic cases for kids that require the use of a maxillary expander to widen the jaw especially benefit from interceptive treatment during preadolescence because the suture connecting the two halves of the upper jaw has not hardened yet. Others cases in which the upper front teeth protrude excessively should be corrected early on to prevent the risk for trauma or injury in the event of a fall or hit to the mouth during play.
